Description
Svarog is the celestial smith and sky father of Slavic mythology, associated with heavenly fire and creation. He forged the sun and established cosmic order, representing the creative and ordering principle of the universe.
Considered the father of other important deities like Dazhbog (sun god) and Svarozhich (fire god), Svarog was worshipped as a distant but benevolent creator figure who shaped the world through his divine craftsmanship.
Mythology
According to Slavic creation myths, Svarog forged the sun in his celestial forge and placed it in the sky, bringing light and warmth to the world. He is said to have created the first humans from clay at his forge.
Another important myth tells how Svarog established the first laws and social order, including monogamous marriage and the division of labor, making him a culture hero as well as a creator god.
Worship
Svarog was worshipped at high places and near sacred fires. His rituals often involved solar symbols and the lighting of ceremonial fires, especially during solstices and equinoxes.
After Christianization, aspects of Svarog were absorbed into the cult of Saint Michael and Saint Elijah, while his smithing aspects influenced folk beliefs about magical blacksmiths.
